MULAN: Chapter I

Promise: Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu, she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.

CHAPTER 1: Wall of China

[A Chinese painting of the Great Wall of China is slowly painted across the screen. The words Walt Disney Pictures present and then Mulan and the dragon symbol appear. The painting becomes animated, and a Chinese soldier walks around his post. Suddenly, a bird of prey hits the back of his head...]

Soldier: Ah! Where's my helmet? [The hawk lets out a call.] What the freak? Is that hook fly out and the guardians. [The soldier walks over to the edge of the wall. A hook comes flying up, followed by many more.] Uh-oh, Shan-Yu and his guards is suddenly. [Running back to his post] You're under attack! Light the signal!

[The door opens, revealing a couple of Huns. The soldier climbs up the ladder.]

Soldier: [lighting the signal with a torch, while staring at the Hun leader; other signals go on all the way along the Great Wall] Now all of China you know in here.

Shan-Yu: [picking up a flag and toasting it in the signal fire] Perfect.

[The Chinese General and two soldiers walk into the Emperor's chamber and bow.]

Emperor: Your report, General.

General: The Huns have crossed our border here, Your Majesty.
