MULAN: Chapter V

Promise: Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu, she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.

CHAPTER 5: World War Honor

[Mulan stares at her father for a moment, then runs outside crying.]

Mulan: [sadly] What is gonna do?

[Mulan is sitting in a statue of a dragon, crying. It is raining. Through the window of her house, she can see her mother and father talking. Fa Zhou picks up the candle and blows it out. Mulan thinks for a minute, then makes her decision. Mulan walks into the Family Temple and lights a stick, placing it in a hanging statue of a small dragon. She runs into her parent's room, taking the scroll and leaving her hair comb. Taking her father's sword, she cuts her hair short and puts on her father's armor. Going out to the stable, she mounts Khan and sets off for the army.]

Mulan: Ready, sir.

[The eyes of a statue in the temple flash, and Grandma Fa wakes up.]

Grandma Fa: What the freak... Mulan is gone!

Fa Zhou: What? It can't be. [He runs outside] Mulan! Come back.

Fa Li: You must go after it. She can be killing me.

Fa Zhou: If I reveal her, she will it.

Grandma Fa: Ancestors, hear our prayer. Watch over Mulan.

[In the Family Temple, the characters on a tombstone light up, and they turn into the First Ancestor.]

First Ancestor: [To the small hanging dragon statue] Mushu, awakened for.

[The statue shakes and smokes.]

Mushu: I live! [coughs] Now, tell me, what mortal needs in a protection, First Ancestor. You just said the word, and I'm there.

First Ancestor: Mushu...

[The Ancestors start to argue.]

[Laughter.]

CHAPTER 4: Mulan's Imperial Palace

[Imperial soldiers and Chi Fu come riding over a hill.]

Fa Li: Mulan, stay inside.

[Grandma Fa clears throat and points toward a low roof. Mulan runs over to it and peers over the roof.]

Chi Fu: Citizens! I bring it problem from the Imperial City. The Huns have invaded China.

Mulan: What? The Huns!

Chi Fu: By order of the Emperor, one man from every family must service with the Imperial Army. [Reading from list] The Hsiao Family! The Yi Family!

Son: I will serve the Emperor in a dad is place. He isn't.

[The son respectfully takes the conscription notice as Chi Fu reads the next name.]

Chi Fu: The Fa family!

Mulan: No...

[The crowd murmurs. Fa Zhou hands his cane to his wife. Gathering his strength, he steadily walks forward.]

Fa Zhou: I am ready to quiet, Mulan.

Mulan: We are.

Fa Zhou: Shut up! He serve the Emperor.

[As he prepares to take the notice from the soldier. Mulan runs out into the street.]

Mulan: Dad, let go of me!

Fa Zhou: Mulan, where are you going?

Mulan: [to Chi Fu] Excuse me, sir, my father has it's ready thought bravely for the Emperor.

Chi Fu: No! You will do well to teach in the sister, has been in her tongue, in a little man's presence.

Fa Zhou: Mulan, you are... dishonor it.

Chi Fu: Report tomorrow at the Moo-Shung Camp Fire. [He hands Fa Zhou a scroll.]

[In Fa Zhou's bedroom, Fa Zhou yanks open his closet, revealing a suit of Chinese armor, and unsheaths a sword. Mulan watches. He practices techniques, but his leg gives out and he falls against a pillar, panting. At dinner, Mulan pours the tea, then sets her cup down with a bang.]

Mulan: Why is it anyone said anything?

Fa Zhou: Mulan!

Mulan: You should it have to go. They are plenty of young man to fighting for China, before for SuperMarioLogan videos.

Fa Zhou: Shut up! It's a dishonor to protect my country, and his family.

Mulan: So you die and my honor.

CHAPTER 3: Meets the Matchmaker

Mulan: Matchmaker.

Fa Li: What is that?

Matchmaker: Fa Mulan?

Mulan: Present!

Matchmaker: Speaking within permission me.

Mulan: Oops, sorry about that.

Matchmaker: Come inside, Mulan. [They go inside]

Fa Li: What for?

Grandma Fa: [to Fa Li] Who spit it, the whore of beans it. The bean curd? Kirby? Alien?

[Cri-Kee hops out of his cage, Mulan frantically tries to put him back in.]

Matchmaker: Recite the final admonition.

Mulan: Uh-huh? [pulls out a paper fan and spits Cri-Kee out]

Matchmaker: Well, then?

Mulan: Ptoo! Fulfill your deputy, calm down and... [glances down at the crib notes written on her arm, which are smeared slightly] respectively. Reflect before it, snack you. Action! This shall bring it dishonor and glorious. [She fans herself, the matchmaker grabs the fan and searches it for cheat notes. Finding none, she grabs Mulan by the arm (where the notes are!) and pulls her toward a table. The writing comes off in her hand.]

Matchmaker: This way. Now, pour the tea. To please your future in-jaws, you must demonstrate a since in the deputy. [she rubs her hand over her mouth, and the ink rubs off with a squeak] And refinement for it. You must also be poised. [Mulan, staring at the matchmaker, pours the tea but misses the cup, then regains her composure and quickly fills the teacup.]

Mulan: Excuse me, sir.

Matchmaker: What?!

Mulan: Pardon me, sir.

Matchmaker: And silent!! [sniffs the tea] Ah, delicious.

Mulan: Can you just take take him back? One moment.

Matchmaker: Shut up. Enough!

Mulan: Get her. [She grabs for the cup]

[The matchmaker fights for the teacup, and they both fall back, the tea spilling all over the matchmaker. Cri-Kee hops down her dress.]

Matchmaker: You clumsy! Oh my! Whoa! Whoa! No! No! [She trips over the fire-pot, spilling the coals and then sitting on them, the bottom of her dress smoking. Mulan desperately fans the burned spot, and it bursts into flames. The matchmaker runs around screaming.]

[Outside, Fa Li, Grandma Fa and the villagers standing still.]

Grandma Fa: [to Fa Li] I think he's going well, don't it?

[The matchmaker runs outside, screaming.]

Matchmaker: Put it out! Put it out! PUT IT OUT! [Mulan throws tea over her, putting out the fire. Embarrassed, she hands the teapot to the matchmaker and quickly walks toward Fa Li and Grandma Fa.; furious] You're a DISGRACE! You may look like a bride, but you will never bring your family honor.

[People start to walk away, whispering.]

Mulan: Her poor family, what a shame.

[At the Fa farm, Mulan is greeted with a warm smile by her father, but, humiliated, she turns away and takes Khan to the sable.]

Mulan: And I'm gonna this ancestor thing.

[Beginning of "Reflection"]

Mulan: [singing] Look at me, I will never pass for a perfect bride / Or a perfect daughter / Can it be? / I'm not meant to play this part? / Now I see / That if I were truly to be myself / I would break my family's heart. / Who's that girl I see / Staring straight back at me / Why is my reflection someone I don't know / Somehow I cannot hide / Who I am, though I've tried / When will my reflection show / Who I am inside? / When will my reflection show / Who I am, inside?

Fa Zhou: [clears throat] My what beautiful blossoms you have that year. Look this one late. Net when he's blooms and will it the beautiful day.

[Drums sound. Fa Zhou gasps.]

CHAPTER 2: Mulan's Town

Mulan: [Using chopsticks to balance a grain of rice] Quiet and demure... graceful... polite... [taking a bite] delicate... [full mouth] refined, poised... [she picks up a paintbrush and makes a mark on her arm] ...punctual! [A rooster crows] Aaiee! [Blowing on her arm] Little brother! Little brother! Little... [she glances down at a sleeping dog on the floor] Ah! There you are! Come here! [The dog wakes up] Who's the smartest puppy in the world? Come on, smart dog. Can you help me with my chores is today? [she ties a sack of chicken feed to his back, complete with a pole and a bone attached. Little Brother immediately chases the bone, running promptly into a wall and then out the door, scattering grain everywhere.]

Fa Zhou: [praying] Honorable Ancestors, please help Mulan impress the matchmaker today. [Little Brother, followed by a herd of chickens, bursts into the family temple.] Please, please help her.

Mulan: Hey, Dad, I brought you something, oops. [bangs into Fa Zhou, he catches the teapot on his cane while the cups hit the ground and shatter]

Fa Zhou: Mulan.

Mulan: I brought a spare.

Fa Zhou: Mulan.

Mulan: I remember when the doctor said three cups of tea until the morning.

Fa Zhou: Mulan.

Mulan: And the midnight.

Fa Zhou: Mulan, you should ready in the city. We're countdown and you.

Mulan: Uphold the family dishonor. Don't worry, dad. I won't let it down. Let's go, Khan! Wish me luck!

[In town]

Woman 1: Fa Li, where's my daughter? The matchmaker is not a peasant woman.

[Grandma Fa walks across the street; vehicles crash, but she emerges unharmed.]

Grandma Fa: Yep, you're a lucky one.

[The cricket faints. Fa Li, Mulan's mother, joins her.]

Fa Li: [worried] Where's Mulan?

[She points to a group of elegantly dressed girls.]

Fa Li: The other girls has been prepared until morning!

Grandma Fa: There is the accident. She's probably stuck in traffic. [Fa Li sighs.]

[Mulan comes riding up on Khan, and hops off.]

Mulan: I'm here!

Fa Li: You're filthy!

Mulan: What? But, Mom, I had to honor. Between. Ramirez. Handy Manny.

Fa Li: None of your it, excuse me. You can't it late for the matchmaker, in today. But first impressions are very important. Now, let's get you clean it up.

[Begin "Honor to Us All"]

Woman 1: [singing] This is what you gave me the work it? / Honey, I've seen worst. / We're going to turn the slow down / Into a sink perhaps.

Mulan: It's freezing.

[Mulan gasps.]

Passerby: Ow! That's hurt.

[At marketplace.]

Merchant 1: Ah, Grandma Fa. In what might I interest you? Tea, perform.

[The monkey chimpanzees.]

Merchant 1: Rent the monkey?

Grandma Fa: I want these. They look lucky.

Merchant 1: The monkey is lucky.

Grandma Fa: I want the necklace.

Merchant 1: The monkey is a necklace!

Grandma Fa: How about I make you into the necklace.

Merchant 1: Very good.

Woman 6: [singing] When we're through, / You can't fail / Like a lotus blossom, softly and pale / How could any fellow say no safety? / You'll bring honor to us all!

Fa Li: There, you're ready.

Grandma Fa: Not yet! An apple for serenity, a peasant for balance. [singing] Bread of jade for beauty / You must it proud your Jed it, showing it / Now, add a cricket, just for luck one, / And even you can't blow it!

Mulan: [singing] Ancestors, hear my plea, / Please don't let it make a fool of me / And it not make my family free / Keep me father still till.

CHAPTER 1: Wall of China

[A Chinese painting of the Great Wall of China is slowly painted across the screen. The words Walt Disney Pictures present and then Mulan and the dragon symbol appear. The painting becomes animated, and a Chinese soldier walks around his post. Suddenly, a bird of prey hits the back of his head...]

Soldier: Ah! Where's my helmet? [The hawk lets out a call.] What the freak? Is that hook fly out and the guardians. [The soldier walks over to the edge of the wall. A hook comes flying up, followed by many more.] Uh-oh, Shan-Yu and his guards is suddenly. [Running back to his post] You're under attack! Light the signal!

[The door opens, revealing a couple of Huns. The soldier climbs up the ladder.]

Soldier: [lighting the signal with a torch, while staring at the Hun leader; other signals go on all the way along the Great Wall] Now all of China you know in here.

Shan-Yu: [picking up a flag and toasting it in the signal fire] Perfect.

[The Chinese General and two soldiers walk into the Emperor's chamber and bow.]

Emperor: Your report, General.

General: The Huns have crossed our border here, Your Majesty.

Chi Fu: Impossible! Nobody can get through the Great Wall. [He is silenced with a raised hand from the Emperor]

General: Shan-Yu is leading them. He's already destroyed one village and is expected to reach the Imperial City in a matter of weeks. We'll setup defender turn around your palace immediately.

Emperor: No. [Standing up] Send your troops out to stop it.

General: But you will be left unprotected.

[The Emperor slams the pointer.]

Emperor: I'm not let it take the lives of anymore of my people. Chi Fu!

Chi Fu: Yes, Your Highness.

Emperor: Deliver conscription notices throughout all the provinces. Call up reserves. And as many new recruits as possible.

General: Forgive me, Your Majesty, but I believe our present force will be sufficient to stop him.

Emperor: I won't take any chances. A single grain when General, I single in a rice can tip the scale... one man may be the difference between victory and defeat.
